Claudio Pisa is a member of the Distributed Computing and Storage department at GARR. He is involved in the design, development and management of virtualization infrastructures and cloud services. He obtained the master degree in Computer Science engineering at the Roma Tre University and his Ph.D from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" in 2013, visiting the Maynooth University (Ireland) for most of 2012. He has worked in the R&D sector in both academia and industry, participating to several European projects in the domains of computer networks, cloud/edge computing and computer security. He has also lectured in university courses, focusing mostly on programming classes. Moreover, he is active in the FLOSS community and community networks enthusiast.

- la GARR Cloud Platform (https://cloud.garr.it/) è basata su OpenStack e offre un servizio di tipo IaaS, in cui gli utenti possono gestire le loro risorse virtuali, su diverse regioni geografiche (anche federate), collegate dalla rete GARR. Attualmente la GARR Cloud Platform accoglie circa 450 utenti e le loro circa 1100 macchine virtuali;

Juju Charms for service deployment and management (and how to develop them)

Juju (https://github.com/juju/juju) is a free and open source tool for the deployment, configuration and management of services on public and private cloud infrastructures. Juju users employ a high-level declarative language, while the instructions needed for the actual deployment and configuration are encapsulated in script collections called Charms, which can be written in any scripting/programming language. Juju takes care of orchestrating the deployment and composition of Charms, of maintaining their state and of scaling their services. The Juju store (https://jaas.ai/store) encompasses an extensive catalogue of Charms, provided freely by the community. GARR devops employ this tool for the daily management of the GARR Cloud Platform and GARR Container Platform:
- the GARR Cloud Platform (https://cloud.garr.it/) is based on OpenStack and provides a IaaS service: users can manage their resources over different geographical (federated) regions connected to the GARR network. Currently the GARR Cloud Platform serves approximately 450 users with 1100 virtual machines;
- the GARR Container Platform (https://cloud.garr.it/containers/), based on Kubernetes and hosted on a bare metal cluster, offers to the GARR community a tool for the fast and scalable deployment of applications, providing also GPU resources.
Moreover, GARR provides DaaS (Deployment as a Service), to ease the deployment of applications on the GARR Cloud Platform via Juju through a web interface. This talk will present Juju and its basic concepts, demonstrate an application deployment through DaaS from the Juju store on the GARR Cloud Platform and introduce briefly to Charm development.
