GEANT innovation programme: competenze e nuove idee dalla comunità delle NREN
GEANT Innovation Programme: new ideas and expertise from the NREN's Community
Claudio Allocchio ha studiato Astrofisica e Fisica delle Particelle Elementari, ma anche musica (Pianoforte) al Conservatorio. Nel 1985 ha iniziato ad occuparti di reti di calcolatori presso il CERN, ritornando a Trieste nel 1988. È uno dei fondatori del GARR, ed ha diretto il progetto COSINE Mail Gateway Services all'inizio degli anni '90, realizzando il primo servizio globale di mail.
Per 11 anni è stato il presidente della Naming Authority Italiana (organismo che ha regolato il dominio ".it"). Membro di IETF dal 1991, è stato coordinatore ed ora senior member del Real Time and Applications Area Directorate. Al GARR è Senior Manager and Advisor, coordinando Servizi Applicativi Avanzati e l'area Sicurezza e Policy, ed uno dei creatori di LoLa, il sistema di videoconferenza ultraveloce. È il Chairman del GEANT Community Committee. Ha vinto la Vietsch Medal of Honour nel 2019 e la eCulture award nel 2021
Claudio Allocchio studied Astrophysics and Physics of Elementary Particles, but also music (piano) at the Conservatory. In 1985 he began to deal with computer networks at CERN, returning to Trieste in 1988. He is a founder of GARR Network, and directed the project COSINE Mail Gateway Services in the early 90s, creating the first e-mail global service. For 11 years he was also the president of the Italian Naming Authority (body that regulated the ".it" domain). Member of IETF since 1991, he was in charge and now is senior member of the Real Time and Application Area Directorate. At GARR he is Senior Manager and Advisor, coordinating Advanced Application Services, Security and Policy areas and one of the creators of LoLA, the ultra-fast videoconferencing system. He is Chair of the GEANT Community Committee. He won the Vietsch Medal of Honour in 2019 and the eCulture award in 2021
ABSTRACT
L'innovazione nasce spesso dal basso, da esigenze vera da risolvere, da idee che nascono nella comunità e poi vengono condivise. L'innovazione può anche partire da una idea che poi non funziona, ma anche in questo caso si ottiene un risultato positivo. Il GEANT Innovation Programma aiuta, dal 2021, chi nella comunità delle NREN europee ha una idea e vuole provare a svilupparla, fornendogli il supporto iniziale ed aiutandolo a trovare sostegno e collegamenti con altri membri della comunità e con le NREN stesse. In questo modo si portano in luce anche quei gruppi che spesso hanno conoscenze avanzate ma non sempre sono in contatto con altri. Illustreremo brevemente i progetti che nel 2021 e 2022 hanno passato la selezione, con particolare attenzione a quelli arrivati dalla comunità GARR, che sinora ha saputo vincere quasi la metà dei grant disponibili.
Innovation is often a bottom up process, which starts from true issues to fix, from ideas born and shared inside the community. Innovation process can also result in an idea which then fails its target, but also in such a case we obtain a positive result. The GEANT Innovation Programma helps, since 2021, those groups in the europen NRENs communit who have an idea and want to put it in a real trial, providing resources, contacts inside the community and with the NRENs themselves. In this way we also come in touch with those groups who often have advanced knowledge, but not always are in contact with others.
We will briefly showcase the 2021 and 2022 awarded projects, with a spotlight on the ones originated from the GARR community, a very successful one, given nearly half of the assigned grants were awarded to them.
