Professore Ordinario presso l'Università degli Studi di Bologna dal 2003, svolge le sue ricerche nell'ambito della fisica nucleare e subnucleare. Attualmente svolge le proprie ricerche nell'ambito della collaborazione ATLAS presso il CERN di Ginevra. Tali ricerche hanno portato alla scoperta del bosone di Higgs nel 2012.

Impegnato in progetti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali, collabora con diversi Istituti internazionali è autore di più di 300 pubblicazioni. La sua attività di ricerca ha riguardato aspetti tecnologici e strumentali, principalmente nel campo della calorimetria. A questo proposito va ricordata la realizzazione del calorimetro elettromagnetico dell’esperimento OBELIX e di quello dell’esperimento HERA-B, la realizzazione di un innovativo spettrometro per neutroni e studi su rivelatori al Silicio.
Dal 2008 è Presidente della Fondazione Giuseppe Occhialini di Fossombrone. Dal 2012 è componente della Giunta Esecutiva dell’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare Dal 2013 al 2014 e dal 2016 ad oggi è Vice Presidente dell’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare

Tra i suoi ruoli di responsabilità e coordinamento ci sono quelli di Run Coordinator per diverse misure presso l’esperimento OBELIX, di rappresentante nazionale dell’esperimento HERA-B presso la Commissione Nazionale I (CSN1) dell’INFN e Physics Coordinator dell’intero esperimento HERA-B dalla fine del 2000 a tutt’oggi. Zoccoli è inoltre referee di riviste internazionali e referee del MIUR per l’assegnazione di fondi per la ricerca.

Zoccoli è rappresentante italiano in ECFA (European Committee for Future Accelerators), in ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) nel panel PSE (physics, science and engineering), nel RRB (Research Review Board) del CERN di Ginevra e Alternate del rappresentante italiano (a nomina MIUR) nel Program Committee di Horizon 2020 sulle Research Infrastructures. È inoltre componente del CdA del Consortium GARR e del Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI).

Zoccoli has been professor at the University of Bologna since 2003. He is currently conducting research activities in the field of nuclear and subnuclear physics at ATLAS at CERN in Geneva. These activity led to the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012.
He has been involved in national and international research projects, collaborating with several international institutes and he is the author of more than 300 publications. His research activity focused on technological and instrumental aspects, mainly in the field of calorimetry. At this regard the creation of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the OBELIX and HERA-B experiment should be mentioned as well as the creation of an innovative spectrometer for neutrons and studies on silicon detectors. Since 2008 he has been President of Giuseppe Occhialini Foundation of Fossombrone and, since 2012 he has been part of the Executive Board of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics.
From 2013 to 2014 and from 2016 to today he has been Vice President of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics.
Among his roles: Run Coordinator for the OBELIX experiment, national representative of the HERA-B experiment at the National Commission I (CSN1) of the INFN and Physics Coordinator of the entire HERA-B experiment from the end of 2000 until today. Zoccoli is also referee of international journals and MIUR judges for allocation of research funds.
Zoccoli is the Italian representative at ECFA (European Committee for Future Accelerators), ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) in the PSE panel (physics, science and engineering), in the RRB (Research Review Board) of CERN in Geneva and alternate of the Italian representative (appointed by the Ministry of Education) in the Horizon 2020 Program Committee on Research Infrastructures.
He is also a member of Consortium GARR Executive Board and the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI).
